Phil goes to a cafe, requesting Annie through their telepathic connection if she’s able to find out what he’s seeing or what he’s feeling (wanting to make sure she did not notice that he was ogling the barista). Annie says she can hear what thoughts are directed at her. She then encourages Phil to go ask out the barista, and he does but backs off and says she gives terrible advice. Both continue to chat through their heads, each ordering a pizza to have a telepathic date.

He apologizes, hitting him over the head with a candlestick to ensure he has done the deed when Phil realizes that he killed the guy. He hears a little girl call for her dad, turning around to see a young child standing in the doorway. Annie, not in the mind but in person of Phil, walks up to get her daughter to bed. Phil, covered in blood, holds out his arms in happiness when he sees her, saying,”Annie, it’s me.”

In bed Phil and Annie find that as long as their thoughts are directed by them in one another, they can hear each other if they talk out loud, not only when they’re thinking. Phil ends up with an existential crisis about his purpose and Annie says that she believes there has to be a reason for everything. Annie believes one day they’ll see they were following their path, and promises.

Phil tells Annie he needs to fulfill her, but Annie says she never intended for it to get far and then says she can’t do this and it is too dangerous.

Phil speaks to his therapist about it, who wants to talk about the possibility the voice belonged to not someone else and Phil, that it may be a mechanism he used to help him get out of the date. When the physician brings up identity disorder, Annie pops up in Phil’s mind, saying she’s bored. Both eventually agree that their therapists suck and think they are only mad, and Phil decides (with Annie’s help) that he doesn’t have to stay and listen to what his therapist is telling him. From his session, Phil walks with that.

After some joking around, Annie admits she was jealous of the barista. The couple shares their names and places . Annie makes Phil promise because she thinks knowing more will ruin what makes their connection romantic, he will not look up her. Phil doesn’t keep his promise for long and looks up her, seeing a photo of her before he starts chatting with her.
Peele ends up the episode:”What kind of compromise goes into connecting with another human being? Can it be meeting in the center? Or going all of the way to the end of the line? Connection was found by philip Hayes but only with the part of his soul. A region of self that he’ll inhabit for the rest of his life. Here, in The Twilight Zone.”
