Netflix Acquires Kumail Nanjiani-Issa Rae Comedy The Lovebirds
Netflix acquires Kumail Nanjiani-Issa Rae humor The Lovebirds
The Kumail Nanjiani (The enormous Sick) and Issa Rae (Insecure)-led romantic comedy The Lovebirds was one of those unlucky casualties in Paramount’s calendar shuffling amidst global coronavirus concerns and now it appears that in a deal between Netflix and the studio, in addition to production company Media Rights Capital, it will be heading to the streaming support, based on Deadline.

The film was originally slated premiere at the Austin, Texas-based South by Southwest Film Festival before the event was cancelled, as well as was set to hit theaters on April 3 before being hauled by Paramount alongside A Quiet Place Part II and Blue Story. This also marks the second time the streaming service has acquired a film in the studio after surprise announcing during the 2018 Super Bowl Netflix would be debuting The Cloverfield Paradox after the game.
A couple (Issa Rae & Kumail Nanjiani) experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they’re unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery. As their journey takes them they must find out how they, and their connection, can endure.
The movie is directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) and written by Aaron Abrams (The Go-Getters) and Brendan Gall (Blindspot, The Go-Getters) from a story by Martin Gero. Oly Obst tom Lassally, Todd Shulman, Jordana Mollick and Gero will create, with Nanjiani, Rae, and Showalter serving as executive producers.
