Is Lethal Weapon 5 Actually Happening?

Whoa! Lethal Weapon 5 might actually happen. No, really. According to producer Dan Lin, who participated in a recent roundtable discussion to discuss the Academy Award-nominated film The Two Popes, it sounds like everyone is on board to bring Riggs and Murtaugh back to the big screen — even if they may seem a little too old for this **t. You can take a look at the roundtable in the player below. Lin talks about Lethal Weapon starting at 44:14.

“We are trying to make the final’Lethal Weapon’ movie. And Dick Donner’s coming back,” said Lin. “The first cast is coming back. And it’s just amazing.  The story is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it is about the script.”

That is one helluva soundbite. Naturally, the last we heard about Lethal Weapon 5 was that it was likely to be titled Lethal Finale and that it was likely to be very dark. This, from the man himself, Richard Donner:

“And I am ready to do 5. It is called’Lethal Finale.’ It is very dark. And we were all set to go and now Warner Bros. is doing their old-fashioned tricks. Not Warner Bros., there is this guy who runs the studio who is great but they have these people from the legal department who do the negotiating in the most counter-productive way. They ought to be sent to a studio and work with the producers and actors and directors, and learn what makes a film, and then negotiate. But it’s just embarrassing. And because there’s a wonderful writer named Channing Gibson, who wrote me 4 it is too bad, and we’ve got a really great story. I wanted to end it on an emotional note, and I do not think it’s gon t happen, although it is dark. It is heartbreaking.”

This was back in February of 2018. A lot of time has passed. Needless to say, if you’ve seen any including the terrific Dragged Round Concrete, you will know he can handle an action film. Glover just appeared in Jumanji: The Next Level, albeit in a small role that really played up his age. Hey, if we could get nine Fast and Furious movies, why can not we have a fifth Lethal Weapon?

What do you think? Do you want another Lethal Weapon?

  1. I still don’t think Sonic needed a live action movie, but I’m obligated to see it due to the rework of his design. I can’t blow off the one time in history a movie studio actually listened to and respected the fans.
