Diamond Will Cease Comic Book Distribution to Stores

Diamond will cease comic book distribution to stores

Within a huge blow to the market, Diamond Comic Distributors will cease accepting new comic books. Diamond is the largest distributor of comics in North America, with exclusive distribution agreements with major publishers including DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse, IDW, Image and more.

This news is obviously born out of the outbreak and its crippling effect on businesses. Comic book retailers are particularly vulnerable, as most operate on slim margins and face competition from comics purveyors such as Comixology or online retailers such as Amazon. With the shutdown of Diamond, mortar and brick comics retailers will be unable to function.

The outlet notes that Diamond will continue to ship out comics and other product in its warehouse for the time being, but it won’t be long before the flow of issues stops entirely.

The move comes less than two weeks after Diamond cancelled its retailer summit, which was to have taken place in Orlando, Florida. Shortly after that the occasion Free Comic Book May was postponed until an unspecified date.

Before the current pandemic, 2020 was expected to be a massive year for comic book films in the cinemas including the already-released Birds of Prey and Bloodshot in addition to the forthcoming The New Mutants, Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984, The Eternals, Morbius, Venom two and The King’s Man.
